Elephant Adoption
The Asian Elephant is one of the world's largest land animals, seocnd only to its close relative, the African Elephant. Asian elephants live in small groups of 15 - 40 individuals, consiting of related females and their young, led by old matriarchs - head of females. Bulls (male elephants) leave their family group when they are between 10 and 16 years old. When they are adults, only the strongest males mate with the females, and spend most of their time in small, all-male groups or wander on their own.
Each group of elephants has close links with up to 5 other families in the same area, and it is these linked groups that make up a herd. An elephants day follows a regular routine of feeding, sleeping and travelling to new feeding areas. Meeting, greeting and communicating with other elephants is an important part of every day, and helps build a bond enabling them to co-operate with each other to protect and guide their young. Asian Elephants are intellingent animals, and they have been reported to be able to us tools. For example, they sometimes use sticks held in their trunk to scratch themselves or to swat insects. Asian Elephants have been demosticated for many thousands of years and have been used as draught and war animals up to modern times, However, the Asian elephant can be an agricultural pest, eating up to 150kg (300lb) of crops per day. By adopting an elephant, you will help ensure this endangered species is looked after and stop its decrease in numbers in the wild. Humans are making huge changes to the Earth. Forests are being felled, wetlands drained and the oceans polluted. As habitats disappear, so do the species that live in them. Air pollution caused by the burning of fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas - in the home, by power stations and transport, contributes not only to climate change, but also to health problems such as asthma. The pressures on our planet have become so great that an urgent rethink about how we behave is now necessary if we are to have a world that we and our children will want to live in. |
